East Side Pies
Stop us if you have heard this one before… Its 3am- 2 Jews are playing chess. One is a baker and one is a bouncer. They are on their way to or from work respectively… While in most towns that may sound like the opening line of a joke- in Austin we call that the birth of a pizza shop- East Side Pies. This is where the whistle was blown to kick off the story of how our old friends created a locally driven restaurant that is about to celebrate 20 years of existence and operates 3 locations. Michael Freid was a baker working over the early morning ovens at Central Market and Noah Polk was known as the fastest man on Red River between 6th and 7th streets while working over unruly patrons at Emo’s. These two good guys hatched the idea of starting a pizza joint while playing chess in a coffee shop before Michael went to work and after Noah finished his. Not only known for their ability to serve up a good time, the boys have established themselves as one of this town’s DP’s when it comes to thin crust pizza and sandwich shops. They pride themselves in assisting both this community and their customers' bellies. Michael and Noah work with local farms and ranches to gather their ingredients that make up the roster. The dough and the sauces are all made fresh in house every day. So take the family, take the friends, or have it catered for an event. If you are hungry- just go see them and let them serve you up a winner. Just don’t stay past closing or challenge Noah to a race. Top Notch
Alright, Alright , Alright - What could be more iconic for an old school Austin iconic partnership than The Fighting Leslies and Top Notch? This old Austin eatery has been around as long as most of our members have been alive and dang near all of us grew up eating there. Ray and Frances’ classic hangout hasn’t changed much and there is good reason for it. Their charcoal grilled and flame kissed burgers are starting eleven material and their classic fried chicken has been named, “Best in Texas”. No one would know that an ownership change occurred back in 2010 because it has been business as usual ever since FLDC member Kelly Chappel came off the bench and took over management of the operation. Kelly is about as old as the grill itself and has been putting in the hours off the pitch to keep the flame burning hot. Let us be the first to tell you that Burnet Road is back on top these days even though some of the places have been there since north of 183 was undeveloped and Pflugerville was a 45 minute drive out to the country. Get on over to Top Notch, grab a table or order from your car or truck and score a goal for your tummy. Ol’ Matt McConaughey said Austin FC is in a longview approach calling it a '100 year war' focusing on sustainable growth, community connections and establishing a deep-rooted soccer culture. Little did we know when we became Austin FC members and formed the Fighting Leslies Drinking Club that our friends Mark Harris and Dave Dart would open a bar next to the stadium.
